Wang Honghua, more famously known as Vermillion Snow (Yiyi Hongxue), is a character that appears in Shining Nikki.
Profile[]
Appearance[]
Wang Honghua wears a Cloud Empire-esque cloak, with a similarly fashioned top and bottom. She seems to carry a giant paintbrush and its case with her. The outfit is adorned with the Chinese Knot which is usually done in red, and symbolises good luck. She has long white hair, and likely dyed some strands of her hair red. Her eyes are a brilliant golden colour, contrasting with the rest of her outfit. There are also three visible red markings on her forehead, likely to either be a tattoo or facepaint.
Personality[]
In the global release, Wang Honghua is nicknamed "Reddish" by her parents and Chi Xiaoyu. She proclaims to the player that her name is definitely still "Vermillion Snow/Wang Honghua." However, Chi Xiaoyu also calls her by Rosales, and her deceased sister (Wang Xueye/Snownight) called her Rosa.[1]
Because of her war-torn childhood due to the Apple Federation Independence War, she has become quite bitter about her home town, Xibao Town (also known as Westburg). In Flowery Silhouette's "Into Memory" Chapter 2 - Memory of Hometown, she exclaims that she is from Cloud Empire, and it is all that she has ever known.
Despite that, it is shown that she is hard working, as she worked her way into getting into the CENU Design University. As a surprise for her parents, in Chapter 4 - Becoming 18, Honghua buys her parents two golden train tickets back to Xibao Town, with money from her part-time job as a tailor assistant. She did this even though she had a fight with them regarding moving back to Xibao Town for the past 3 chapters. On top of this, she also tells the player that she needs to grow up faster, and that she cannot always rely on her parents.
In the Sight of the Full Moon's "Into Memory," all chapters further elaborate the relationship she had with Wang Xueye, her sister. Most of the story is her retelling memories of the time in Xibao Town to Chi Xiaoyu, as they make mooncakes. Wang Xueyue was described to be bad at cooking, and even after following the recipe exactly, the result became inedible. Honghua then unintentionally changes to recipe to make snowy mooncakes and fills them with red bean paste. It could be inferenced that this is when her original love for the red and white combo began. Before the Wangs moved to Cloud Empire, they used to make mooncakes every year in Xibao Town. Due to the death of Xueyue, Honghua can no longer truly enjoy sweet things, especially snowy mooncakes. Despite this, she lets Chi Xiaoyu feed her one. Honghua reminisces that the taste brings her back to a certain point in time, and it is implied she greatly misses her sister.
Later, it is revealed that Xueyue liked the colour white, and Honghua liked the colour red. After Xueyue's passing, Honghua adopts white into her designs and drawings. This could imply that the reason she defends the red and white colour scheme so much (especially in Full Blossom's "Into Memory") could be due to her sister. She is incredibly stubborn when it comes to these two colours, and refuses to use any other colours in her designs. For this, she got scolded by her colour theory Professor, who tells her that she is limiting herself. Honghua took this as an insult against her (and likely Xueyue) and designs a red-and-white dress anyway for her final design, which made her have to retake the course. Aside from colour theory, all of her other courses are As, which indicates she is a very bright young designer.
History[]
Wang Honghua was born in an ordinary family in Xibao Town, Apple Federation, which was part of Pigeon Kingdom at the time. She also had an elder sister, Wang Xueye. When she was around 7 years old, the Apple Federation Independence War broke out and Xibao was aligned with the army of Apple. After her sister, who became an Apple soldier, died in the war, the family relocated to Cloud Empire to take refugee. They settled there since.
Wang Honghua had very little pleasant memories of Xibao, and identified herself with Cloud Empire, as she has lived there for 10 years as of current. She dreamed of becoming a great designer and wanted to attend CENU Design University. However, when Honghua was 17, her parents wanted her to go back to their hometown Xibao with them and apply for Xibao University too. This plan was strongly opposed by Honghua and she had a big fight with her father. After days of reflection, she began to understand her parents' homesickness and decided that it is time for her to grow up and become independent. They had a deep talk and it was decided that her parents would move back to Xibao while she stayed in Cloud continuing her education.[2]
Relationships[]
Chi Xiaoyu[]
Chi Xiaoyu was Honghua's coursemate, roommate and best friend. In Full Blossom's "Into Memory," Chi Xiaoyu helps Honghua come up with an idea for her final design of the year, and to try and convince their Professor about the red and white colour scheme. Students in the final chapter of the story describe them advertising the dress for two weeks in front of the canteen.
Honghua also tells Chi Xiaoyu about her time in Xibao Town with Xueye.[1] When Chi Xiaoyu feeds Honghua a mooncake, Honghua narrates, "Just like how my sister fed me."
Loen[]
Loen served in the army together with Honghua's sister, Xueye. Xueye's death also inspired him to dedicate himself for maintaining the peace of Miraland.[3] When the Wangs wanted to leave Xibao for a better life during the war, he offered them a lot of help. Honghua seemed to have a crush on Loen.[2]

Etymology[]
Wang Honghua[]
Wang is one of the most common surnames in Chinese. Honghua means "Red Flower" and is also an old-fashioned and boring name which lacks sophistication. Hence, Wang Honghua is not very fond of her name.
Yiyi Hongxue[]
Yiyi Hongxue in Chinese literally means "clothes of red and snow", which reflects the red-and-white colour scheme she loved.
