Appearance[]

Zoey is a young woman with silver-blonde hair tied back into a half ponytail and yellow-green eyes. She has a red and black tattoo on her left arm, a beauty mark below her left eye, and her nails are painted red, while she wears pink lipstick.

She wears black rectangle glasses, a knee-length leather jacket with fur, a cut and scratched black sleeveless turtleneck sweater, golden chain necklace, black fingerless gloves, brown belt, black transparent pantyhose, and leather pants/boots as her attire. She also carries a whip around.

Personality[]

Zoey is a warrior who refuses to back down, which is one of her only weaknesses, as seen in the Into Memory of the Mercenary Queen Designer Reflection. She trains excessively to earn victory, and is known to almost never fail. She thinks easy victories are the most boring, and that wars, businesses, and love should all be challenging to earn and win.

History[]

Background[]

Zoey was born in an army tent in North Kingdom. Her mother was a formidable warrior who died in childbirth with her. Her father was Old Blake, who had an affair with her mother. She was left outside in the snow for three days after being born, as was traditional for Blake children. [4] As Zoey was born out of wedlock, she could not take her father's name and status, instead commanding troops in the field and at bases. When she was 15, she fought in the bloodied glory on her father's behalf to help him consolidate his power, in order to earn his respect and the right to be called by her family name.[5] This was successful, and she then led the Black Water City army for her father. During the Battle of Snowland, they were betrayed by Lorraine, another coalition general, and she was captured. Whilst being held captive, she learned that Lorraine was working for Mercury. She escaped the vehicle she was being transported in with her soldiers, then attacked their escort in retaliation, the 13 soldiers who survived this becoming the first Justiciars.[6] Zoey left North Kingdom shortly after as an exile due to this defeat, believing that remaining there would prevent her from becoming stronger.[5] After leaving North Kingdom, Zoey worked for a man named Booker, who controlled the city of Azureink. Whilst working for him, she secretly amassed power in order to overthrow him as the ruler of the city and eventually killed him.[7]

Main Stages[]

During Chapter 5 of Volume 1, Nikki seeks out Zoey in Rosset City to join the Justiciars after being betrayed by Qin Yi. Zoey agrees to help Nikki after a test of her power. She arranges for Nikki to attend the auction at the Lodden Hotel in disguise as Lady Anya, a Pigeon Kingdom noble[8]. When Nikki is taken prisoner by Apple Federation military following her possession at the hotel, Zoey visits her at the prison.[9] Zoey had used her connections with both Admiral Leiden and Loen to ensure Nikki's safety at the auction, and continues to travel with her after Nikki's release to Starheaven. Zoey is suspicious of Joy, but curious to find out who is behind her actions. She allows Nikki to be captured by Joy, believing that Nikki can protect herself with the power of Designer's Reflection and that by not shielding her, she will allow Nikki to grow stronger.[10] However, when Joy attempts to kill Nikki and herself by pressing a button to destroy the lab, Zoey and the Justiciars break into the lab and knock her out.[11] Zoey takes them both back to a hotel, where she attempts to interrogate Joy about Designer's Reflection. She tells Nikki that she also wants the power of the Manuscript, but Nikki tells her that she will not give it up easily. The two however remain on good terms, going out to eat afterwards with the other Justiciars.

Nikki and Zoey next meet in Chapter 12 of Volume 2, where she meets up with the other Justiciars to discuss Caprico's whereabouts after the events of Void Stardust. Zoey does not initially join them in their search, having to meet with Old Blake first. When she is able to reunite with the others at Hulse Arsenal, they have found Caprico but are surrounded by Norwin's men. She fires a warning shot at the ground in front of Norwin, having realised he is trying to take them with him. He asks her to join him and Old Blake in settling a border dispute with Apple, which she refuses to do, stating that she is no longer a Blake, so is not obligated to help them. However, when Norwin informs them of the disappearance of Fräsen Jr, Zoey agrees to investigate, finding the fact that such a powerful man (who could easily launch a coup) went missing to be suspicious.[12] The notes by the previous engineer of the factory and a painting point to a belief in the Old God of North, which the group believed to be connected to the disappearance.[13]

They agree to head up Mount Eree, a group of three peaks within Mount Koso, as they suspect it to be the site of an ancient ritual. During their search they find what is left of Fräsen Jr who attacked them as an animated dead body.[14] Yeeso and Corleone, who were wounded by the attack, soon become possessed and attack Zoey and the others. After knocking them out, a dark core appears above the group, which entrances and then consumes them.[15] Zoey wakes up in an icy illusion of her fears and her earliest memories of her birth.[4] She fights off the figures attacking her, and finds Norwin in the mirage, where she shatters the dark core of the illusion, freeing them from it. Zoey and Norwin awake in the royal family's mausoleum, concluding that the royal family must be behind the research at the arsenal and Fräsen Jr's disappearance.[16] They regroup with the others and discuss the upcoming peace talks with Apple Federation. Norwin and Zoey decide to settle some business in North before joining the others in Melson.[17] When they do join the others, they uncover a spy from the Mercury group who was tailing Nikki. Zoey attends the peace talks, and when they are interrupted she follows Mercury out of the room. Zoey confronts and attempts to shoot him, but is foiled by his styling power.[18] When she returns to the meeting it has descended into chaos. She breaks up the fighting and helps Norwin, who has been injured, leave.[19] As a result of the negotiations failing, war between Apple and North seems inevitable and Zoey leaves to fight for North - not before covertly evacuating the remaining druids.[20]

As a representative of Savior, Nikki travels to the western front where she meets Zoey again to discuss the possibility of peace with Apple. They meet at a field hospital run by Norwin's mother Narcissa, where Zoey decides to head out into the field.[21] She scolds the commanding officer of Frost Rock City for his incompetence and takes command to cut off the enemy's supply line. The battle is a success, but some of her soldiers are killed.[22] When Zoey and Norwin report on the battle to Old Blake, she tells Old Fräsen that she will find out if he was behind the ambush. The weapon used in the ambush appears to be related to the Old God, despite his death. Her investigation reveals that Old Fräsen had colluded with Apple to plan the ambush, and imprisoned his second son when he protested.[23] Old Fräsen is imprisoned, but escapes and launches an attack on Black Water City with an undead army created from the remaining power of the royal family and the Old God. She and Corleone are forced to retreat when their ammunition runs low, escaping on motorbike to the nearby forest.[24] She sends a small team to find Norwin, but cannot spare more resources from the effort to reclaim Black Water City. Zoey, Nikki and their allies return to Black Water City and manage to retake much of it and the surrounding land of Frozenstream. However, their forces become tired as their undead opponents don't die. A sudden flood sweeps through the city, which Zoey escapes by clinging onto a piece of rebar, killing both the undead opposing forces and many of Zoey's own soldiers. Looking up, she discovers that Norwin was the one to command this flood.[25] As he is crowned the new King of North, she shoots him in the chest, disgusted by what he has become. Although he is unable to be harmed by this, her bullet remains lodged beside his heart. Zoey rips the emblem of North off her clothes and walks away from him, never turning back.[26]

Corleone[]

Corleone is Zoey's Deputy Commander of the Justiciars. He frequently accompanies her on missions, and she regards him as a trusted companion and respected opponent.[6]

Yeeso[]

Yeeso is a member of the Justiciars.He frequently accompanies Zoey on missions.

Caprico[]

Caprico is a weapons dealer who works with the Justiciars. Zoey values his talents and handiwork[27], and has faith in his abilities.[16]

Nikki[]

Nikki is Zoey's ally and friend. When they first met[28], Zoey was intrigued by Nikki and the power she wielded and made efforts to protect Nikki at the auction in Lodden[9]. She helps to pull Nikki away from the power of the Abyss[29] and frees her from Joy's captivity. Zoey often calls Nikki her bunny, reflecting both her fondness and power over Nikki. Zoey comes to regard Nikki as an equal, rather than a pawn, as the story progresses. Zoey is shown to be both surprised and proud of Nikki's growth and her role in Savior.[21]

Mercury[]

Mercury and Zoey are enemies. They first met when Zoey was 16, and was captured following her defeat at the Battle of Snowland. Mercury initially disregarded her as an opponent, which frustrated Zoey. She considers him her nemesis, and regards him as a worthy adversary.

Rien[]

Rien and Zoey are enemies. Zoey does not seem to respect him, as she does not respond to his jabs in favor of pursuing Mercury during the peace talks with Apple Federation. She also refers to him as "a young boy" to Mercury.

Old Blake[]

Old Blake was Zoey's Father. As a child, she sought his approval and recognition, but after her exile she grew not to seek approval from others. Although she earned the right to use his family name, she does not do so as an adult.

Norwin[]

Norwin is Zoey’s half brother. Her relationship with him as a child was strained, both due to him being a legitimate heir to the Blake family and their conflicting ideals.[5] Norwin's vision of peace for North Kingdom conflicted with Zoey's belief that as long as desire exists, conflict will persist. As adults, their relationship is still contentious and she initially refers to him as "a good-for-nothing loser"[12]. However, as chapter 13 progresses she becomes more aligned with Norwin, helping him break free of his mirage and discussing the possibility of peace with Apple Federation. They both acknowledge the potential power of the Old God and fear the impacts its influence could have beyond North. During the war between Apple Federation and North Kingdom, they both fight on behalf of North Kingdom. During this period of time Zoey seems to respect and care for Norwin, even defending his ideals and approach to Old Fräsen.[30] However, when Norwin embraces the power of the God of Nature and floods Black Water City, becoming the new King, Zoey is furious and turns her back on him. [26]
